7 June 1980

In a move to limit the excesses of 1972 and 76, size limits were introduced for the
first time in 1980. There was an early upset when Eric Tabarly was forced to retire as
skipper of the hydrofoil trimaran Paul Ricard due to injury. His replacement, Marc
Pajot, it was decided, had not qualified in accordance with the rules and consequently was
excluded. In the end, due to pressure from the other competitors lead by Philip Weld, he
was allowed to race as an unofficial entry. Paul Ricard finished after 18days
13hours which would have given 5th place.

A new innovation for this race was the introduction of satellite tracking, using the
US/French ARGOS system. The small transmitters carried by each competitor could also send
an emergency signal. Due to the expense of installing these in every yacht, French radio
station, Europe 1 was signed up as co-sponsor with The Observer newspaper.
Welds record breaking achievement, in his second OSTAR, was considerable for a 65
year old, even a such a sprightly one. The Americans victory delighted not only his
fellow countrymen but also the other competitors amongst whom he was a popular figure.
America also won the Gypsy Moth class and were proclaimed victors of the Jester class
until some months later when Jerry Cartwright in Le First was disqualified after it
was discovered he had taken aboard diesel oil from a Cuban fishing vessel.
