With Carlsberg installed as the new event sponsor, 95 boats lined up for the 1988 race. The record breaking winner, Philippe Poupon, took his Nigel Irens designed 60ft trimaran from Plymouth to Newport in an amazing 10 days. Irens was also the designer of second placed Laiterie Mt St Michel.

Briton, Nic Bailey, was the first outside class one to finish. A superb performance in his 40ft class IV trimaran MTC.

Record breaking performances in the leading wave of the fleet were due to fine weather conditions, those further back were not so lucky and experienced strong winds approaching the America continent.

Several boats had close encounters with whales. Mike Birch’s Fujicolor was badly damaged after a collision with one but he made safe harbour in France, taking 11 days, the last three without food. Hyccup was sunk by an aggressive pod of whales forcing David Sellings to take to his liferaft.

OSTAR veteran Jester, in her 8th raced, suffered a fatal knockdown, bursting open a starboard hatch, flooding the cabin. Michael Richey switched on his EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) and was eventually taken onboard a commercial vessel that took Jester in tow. Sadly Jester sank when they were later forced to abandon the tow.
